THE Midland Masters squash tournament came to town last weekend when the event was jointly hosted by Coventry and North Warwickshire Squash Club and Esporta.
The event, which attracted a record entry of 145, is one of six regional tournaments held around the country and players who participate in their age groups are awarded points towards their overall British ranking.
After all the events, the six highest ranked players in each age group are invited to represent England in any forthcoming international fixtures. The age groups for men start at over 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65 and over 70 and the ladies from over 35 to over 60 at five-year intervals.
Former squash international Mo Sarwar, the director of sports at C&NW Squash Club, said: “Coventry is privileged to have hosted a squash event of this magnitude and it was an opportunity for local squash enthusiasts to watch some of the best masters players in the world, which included British and world champions.
“It also proves that you are never too old to compete in any sport and hopefully it will encourage our local players to actually enter the event in the future. The event will also help towards the development of squash in the Coventry area.”
The preliminary rounds took place on Friday 4/12/09 and Saturday 5/12/09 and the finals on Sunday 6/12/09.
